We use cupboards for food, utensils and other most useful resources during cooking in the kitchen. However the main function of the kitchen is cooking food. In the case of homes, the kitchen is depending on the size, furnishing and equipment used in it. 

Here we can also wash and dry clothes in the washing machine in the kitchen. We cook food with love and emotion in the kitchen, we share our feelings, thoughts and daily deeds in the kitchen. It is the place where our beautiful family eats, provided it is large enough. 

Chronology of Nepali kitchens 

According to the 2078(2021) census, 51% of households in Nepal mainly use wood or firewood for cooking. Other common fuel sources include LPG (44.3%), cow dung (2.9%), biogas (1.2%), electricity (0.5%), kerosene (0.05%), and others (0.1%). In comparison, the 2011 census showed that 64% of households relied on wood or firewood for cooking.

  1. In the 1970s–1980s Traditional chulo stoves were common, using firewood for cooking in Nepal.
  2. 1990s: Urban households adopted LPG stoves for cleaner and faster cooking in Nepal.
  3. 2000s: Wealthier families started using modular kitchens in Nepal with modern designs and materials.
  4. 2010s: Modular kitchens became affordable and widespread in urban areas of Nepal, with modern appliances.
  5. 2020s: Urban kitchens use both gas and electric cooking; rural areas adopt eco-friendly practices in Nepal.

1. L Shaped kitchen 

The L shaped kitchen is a work sequence that runs around two walls, keeping the work triangle reasonably compact. In a very small room it may be difficult to avoid placing the refrigerator close to the cooker, so not an ideal arrangement as the refrigerator loses efficiency in cooling. Modular kitchens are popular for their efficient use of space, making them ideal for compact homes.

3. U shaped layout 

This adaptable layout is wrapped around three walls in an unbroken sequence .This layout provides lots of work surface but the two corners would give some wasted space. The price of a U- Shaped Modular Kitchen in Nepal typically ranges between 3 lakhs to 8 lakhs NPR. 

4. Island kitchen 

An Island Kitchen is ideal for spaces with ample room. However, if cooking involves a lot of movement, traditional work triangles can be impractical. In such cases, an island kitchen can help distribute tasks more efficiently, but it requires sufficient space to avoid clutter.

The cost of an island kitchen can vary widely, typically ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3,00,000 or more, depending on the size of the island, materials used, and additional features like storage and wine racks. This setup is best suited for larger kitchens where space is not limited, allowing for a more flexible and efficient cooking environment.
